This
building appeared to have had a generating
plant near it. The roof had a number of
ventilation hoods on the roof indicating
that what was inside needed to be cooled
or vented. We did not enter any buildings.
All photos were taken from the outside.

I
grew up in the latter part of the 20th century. There
was a period called the 80's where it seemed that
a 30 year cold war could go hot at anytime. TV and
media fed on this feverously and provided us with
images of desolation. Pop culture made for TV movies
like The
Day After stick in my mind, These images have
always stuck with me.
While
traveling Ian
and I were going to the black hills area of South
Dakota. In looking at a map we saw a large area
in a national forest service controlled area titled
Abandoned Ordinance Depot. It sounded like a nice
place to get away from it all. After Area 51, and
a uranium tailings pond in Utah, an abandoned ordinance
plant seemed like a perfectly valid destination.
The
previous night had there had been a severe thunderstorm
and the winds were still high. The dark skies seemed
to awake the ghosts of inhabitants
50 years before..
After
returning home and looking at the dissonant tranquility
that the stark landscape and military buildings
provided I did some research via the Internet to
try to determine the history of the place.

The
closest occupied town was Provo. There seemed to
be people living there, but I not a single person
could be found on the streets. There were several
businesses but they all looked less then busy and
had hopefully seen better times.
